Making Kaua`i Your Home
Kaua`i is a wonderful community-based place to live with a thriving economy, a unique culture and unhurried atmosphere. Even as growth and development bring change, Kaua`i manages to maintain its charming, small town appeal.
The prospect of moving to a small, remote island may be daunting at first, but with careful planning, hard work, patience, understanding and realistic expectations, it can be done. Before making the decision to move to Kaua`i, consider whether you would be compatible with island life. If your favorite pastimes are going for long drives or nightclubbing or if you thrive on the hustle of the city and four distinct seasons, ask yourself if you would miss them.
Sure, the weather and scenery are outstanding, but are you ready to live in the middle of the ocean?
Kaua`i is a small, rural community on a tropical island, 2,600 miles from the nearest land mass and this naturally drives the cost of living higher than the U.S. mainland. While Kaua`i has experienced a recent real estate boom, the current market favors sellers over buyers. Rentals are limited and purchasing a home or property can be expensive. The overall median price for residential properties on Kaua`i (year to date as of March 2005) was $589,000, up significantly from $389,000 in 2004.
With economic growth forecast and real income and job numbers continuing to rise and accelerate into 2007, Kaua`i county unemployment is down to less than 3%. Kaua`i is currently experiencing a worker shortage, and some skills are highly in demand. Information on Kauai’s labor needs can be found at http://www.workwisekauai.com.
None the less, incomes on Kaua`i are generally similar to, or lower than, those of the mainland, while the overall cost of living is roughly 35% higher. Many Kaua`i residents work more than one job…
The good news is that Kaua`i is a wonderful community-based place to live with a thriving economy, a unique culture and unhurried atmosphere. Even as growth and development bring change, Kaua`i manages to maintain its charming, small town appeal. The Garden Island in the 21st century remains a friendly, safe place to raise children where the water is blue, the air is clean and the earth is green.
More than for the great weather and scenic beauty, however, people move to Kaua`i because of an intangible wealth measured in quality, not quantity. Content without miles of shopping malls and big city lights, people come to Kaua`i to share and to give, and to appreciate. Above all, they come to live and work in a well integrated, multi-cultural community which values kindness, harmony, pleasantness, humility and patience – in short, they come for the aloha.
